The Word Became Flesh
1
In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.
2 He was with God in the beginning.
3 Through him all
things were made; without him nothing was made that has been made. 4
In him was life, and that life was the light of men.
Colossians 1:15-17
The
Supremacy of Christ
15 He is the image
of the invisible God, the firstborn over all creation. 16 For by him
all things were created: things in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible,
whether thrones or powers or rulers or authorities; all things were created by
him and for him. 17 He is before all things, and in him all things
hold together.
John 1:10-14
10 He was in the
world, and though the world was made through him, the world did not recognize
him. 11 He came to that which was his own, but his own did not
receive him. 12 Yet to all who received him, to those who believed
in his name, he gave the right to become children of God— 13
children born not of natural descent, nor of human decision or a husband’s
will, but born of God.
14 The Word became
flesh and made his dwelling among us.
Luke 1:26-38
The
Birth of Jesus Foretold
26 In the sixth
month, God sent the angel Gabriel to Nazareth, a town in Galilee, 27
to a virgin pledged to be married to a man named Joseph, a descendant of David.
The virgin’s name was Mary. 28 The angel went to her and said,
“Greetings, you who are highly favored! The Lord is with you.”
29 Mary was greatly
troubled at his words and wondered what kind of greeting this might be. 30
But the angel said to her, “Do not be afraid, Mary, you have found favor with
God. 31 You will be with child and give birth to a son, and you are
to give him the name Jesus. 32 He will be great and will be called
the Son of the Most High. The Lord God will give him the throne of his father
David, 33 and he will reign over the house of Jacob forever; his
kingdom will never end.”
34 “How will this
be,” Mary asked the angel, “since I am a virgin?”
35 The angel
answered, “The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most High
will overshadow you. So the holy one to be born will be called the Son of God. 36
Even Elizabeth your relative is going to have a child in her old age, and she
who was said to be barren is in her sixth month. 37 For nothing is
impossible with God.”
38 “I am the Lord’s
servant,” Mary answered. “May it be to me as you have said.” Then the angel
left her.
Matthew 1:18-24

This is how the birth of Jesus Christ came about: His mother Mary was pledged
to be married to Joseph, but before they came together, she was found to be
with child through the Holy Spirit. 19 Because Joseph her husband
was a righteous man and did not want to expose her to public disgrace, he had
in mind to divorce her quietly.
20 But after he had
considered this, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream and said,
“Joseph son of David, do not be afraid to take Mary home as your wife, because
what is conceived in her is from the Holy Spirit. 21 She will give
birth to a son, and you are to give him the name Jesus,[c] because he
will save his people from their sins.”
22 All this took
place to fulfill what the Lord had said through the prophet: 23 “The
virgin will be with child and will give birth to a son, and they will call him
Immanuel”[d]—which
means, “God with us.”
24 When Joseph woke
up, he did what the angel of the Lord had commanded him and took Mary home as
his wife.
Luke
2:1-20
The Birth of Jesus
1 In those days Caesar Augustus
issued a decree that a census should be taken of the entire Roman world. 2
(This was the first census that took place while Quirinius was governor of
Syria.) 3 And everyone went to his own town to register.
4 So Joseph also
went up from the town of Nazareth in Galilee to Judea, to Bethlehem the town of
David, because he belonged to the house and line of David. 5 He went
there to register with Mary, who was pledged to be married to him and was
expecting a child. 6 While they were there, the time came for the
baby to be born, 7 and she gave birth to her firstborn, a son. She
wrapped him in cloths and placed him in a manger, because there was no room for
them in the inn.
The Shepherds and the Angels

And there were shepherds living out in the fields nearby, keeping watch over
their flocks at night. 9 An angel of the Lord appeared to them, and
the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were terrified. 10
But the angel said to them, “Do not be afraid. I bring you good news of great
joy that will be for all the people. 11 Today in the town of David a
Savior has been born to you; he is Christ the Lord. 12 This will be
a sign to you: You will find a baby wrapped in cloths and lying in a manger.”
13 Suddenly a
great company of the heavenly host appeared with the angel, praising God and
saying,
14 “Glory to God
in the highest,
and on earth peace to men on whom his favor rests.”

15 When the angels
had left them and gone into heaven, the shepherds said to one another, “Let’s
go to Bethlehem and see this thing that has happened, which the Lord has told
us about.”
16 So they hurried
off and found Mary and Joseph, and the baby, who was lying in the manger. 17
When they had seen him, they spread the word concerning what had been told them
about this child, 18 and all who heard it were amazed at what the
shepherds said to them. 19 But Mary treasured up all these things
and pondered them in her heart. 20 The shepherds returned,
glorifying and praising God for all the things they had heard and seen, which
were just as they had been told.
John 1:15-18
15 John testifies
concerning him. He cries out, saying, “This was he of whom I said, ‘He who
comes after me has surpassed me because he was before me.’” 16 From
the fullness of his grace we have all received one blessing after another. 17
For the law was given through Moses; grace and truth came through Jesus Christ.
18 No one has ever seen God, but God the One and Only, who is at the
Father’s side, has made him known.
John 3:31-36
31 “The one who comes
from above is above all; the one who is from the earth belongs to the earth,
and speaks as one from the earth. The one who comes from heaven is above all. 32
He testifies to what he has seen and heard, but no one accepts his testimony. 33
The man who has accepted it has certified that God is truthful. 34
For the one whom God has sent speaks the words of God, for God gives the Spirit
without limit. 35 The Father loves the Son and has placed everything
in his hands. 36 Whoever believes in the Son has eternal life, but
whoever rejects the Son will not see life, for God’s wrath remains on him.”
Colossians 1:19-20

For God was pleased to have all his fullness dwell in him, 20 and
through him to reconcile to himself all things, whether things on earth or
things in heaven, by making peace through his blood, shed on the cross.
2 Corinthians 5:21
God made him who had no sin to be
sin for us, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God.
Philippians 3:7-9
7 Whatever was to my
profit I now consider loss for the sake of Christ. 8 What is more, I
consider everything a loss compared to the surpassing greatness of knowing
Christ Jesus my Lord, for whose sake I have lost all things. I consider them
rubbish, that I may gain Christ 9 and be found in him, not having a
righteousness of my own that comes from the law, but that which is through
faith in Christ—the righteousness that comes from God and is by faith.
Colossians 2:13-15
13 When you were dead in
your sins and in the uncircumcision of your sinful nature, God made you alive
with Christ. He forgave us all our sins, 14 having canceled the
written code, with its regulations, that was against us and that stood opposed
to us; he took it away, nailing it to the cross. 15 And having
disarmed the powers and authorities, he made a public spectacle of them,
triumphing over them by the cross.
Ephesians 3:10-12
10 His intent was that
now, through the church, the manifold wisdom of God should be made known to the
rulers and authorities in the heavenly realms, 11 according to his
eternal purpose which he accomplished in Christ Jesus our Lord. 12
In him and through faith in him we may approach God with freedom and
confidence.
Ephesians 3:17-19
And I pray that you, being rooted
and established in love, 18 may have power, together with all the
saints, to grasp how wide and long and high and deep is the love of Christ, 19
and to know this love that surpasses knowledge—that you may be filled to the
measure of all the fullness of God.
Romans
15:5-6
5
May the God who gives endurance and encouragement give you a spirit of unity
among yourselves as you follow Christ Jesus, 6 so that with one
heart and mouth you may glorify the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ.
Philippians 2:5-11

did not consider equality with God something to be grasped,
7 but made himself nothing,
taking the very nature of a servant,
being made in human likeness.
8 And being found in appearance as a man,
he humbled himself
and became obedient to death—
even death on a cross!
9 Therefore God exalted him to the highest place
and gave him the name that is above every name,
10 that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow,
in heaven and on earth and under the earth,
11 and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord,
to the glory of God the Father.
